Types of laptop screen:

"There are many types of replacement laptop screen", continues Mr Christou, "However these are mainly resolution and size differences. Generally there are two types which are LED laptop screens and CCFL laptop screens (often incorrectly named 'LCD' screens)."

CCFL screens have a Cold Cathode Fluorescent Tube (or fluorescent tube, similar to the ones found in offices and some homes), or sometimes 2 CCFL tubes at the bottom and top of the laptop LCD display panel. These tubes are known as backlights, they require a power inverter to fire them as they work on high voltages.

LED laptop screens can be made thinner, have a longer life and use far less power as they do not require a power inverter to operate. Tiny high brightness, low voltage LED lights are placed across the back of the LCD display panel to light it.

Although LED laptop screens have been in production for many years in high end laptops, they are only recently making their appearance in main stream LCD production  and the older CCFL laptop screens are becoming harder to find and more expensive as production stops.

Some panels have a gloss finish; this is a shiny reflective finish and is the most popular fitted. It gives a great colour rendition, bright contrast and a very black - black. These types of Gloss laptop screen are nice for watching movies indoors.

Panels with a MATTE finish have a roughed polish on them and give better viewing capability outside, however this is in place of the great colour and black rendition and MATTE displays have failed in popularity with most buyers because of this.
